Microsoft 365 Data Residency Enhancements Announced

With expanding data residency laws from around the world, Microsoft is announcing plans to offer more data residency locations for Microsoft 365 services. Microsoft 365 is expanding from 15 country locations to an additional 13 locations in the near future. Part of this announcement also includes an EU Data Boundary for the Microsoft Cloud. Microsoft Teams is also now included in the multi-geo and data residency controls. Finally, a new Advanced Data Residency add-on service has been announced offering prioritized migration benefits between locations, data storage at rest for several services, and tools to help with data residency laws. More information on these announcements can be found here

Why This Matters:

  • Cloud laws and legislation continue to change impacting global customers and how / where their data can be stored.
  • These new capabilities and licenses offer additional options for customers to meet these global compliance requirements.
  • Customers can now rehome Teams data into different regions, helping expand the data residency and geographic requirements.
