Technology has never been more accessible. Every day, business leaders spin up homegrown automations, low code tools offer quick fixes to small problems, and employees feel increasingly empowered to take technological leaps they wouldn’t have imagined a decade ago. This is both exciting and risky.
Everything in moderation, right?
The once‑intimidating barrier of writing code can now be crossed in seconds using tools like Codex, Cursor, Gemini, GitHub Copilot, and many others. The ability to “wield tech” has never been easier—but the responsibility to wield it safely has never been greater.
And look, we get it: vibes matter. There’s a certain satisfaction in rolling up your sleeves and getting things done. It feels wholesome. It feels American. But we want to gently caution our well‑intentioned builders against spinning up rogue AI solutions inside an enterprise environment.
Creating AI‑generated code in a silo—especially when done by a business lead without central IT oversight—poses significant risks. While it may speed up prototyping, it often results in technical debt, security exposures, and operational failures.
We’re seeing more of this every day, so we put together a concise outline of key considerations. This isn’t exhaustive—how could it be, when the landscape changes daily— but it highlights some of the major risks and realities.
Bottom Line
AI unlocks enormous potential—but siloed, unmanaged use creates high‑cost, low‑reliability, high‑risk outcomes. Organizations need a production‑first mindset where AI development aligns with IT governance, not outside it.
Every organization needs an enterprise AI usage policy.
“Shadow IT” has been around forever — business units building their own solutions without looping in the official IT team until the last minute.
Shadow AI is the same, just dramatically faster and far riskier.
Every organization needs an active plan to:
• Prepare for AI adoption
• Publish clear, accessible policies
• Distribute guidance across the org
• Govern and monitor AI usage
